The Music of Marius Neset with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band

In April I was fortunate enough to once again conduct the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, this time for a program with the music of Marius Neset. Together with Marius and the drummer Anton Eger the band played two shows at the hr-Sendesaal in Frankfurt. The concert can be watched on YouTube by clicking on the image.

Jazzfonietta

Released in November 2023 on the label Klokkereint, the album Jazzfonietta brings together a string quartet, a sax quartet, a brass quartet, a «rhythm section» consisting of accordion, double bass and drum set, plus an extra percussionist and flutist, with music written and conducted by David Hveem. The ambition was to make music precisely in the intersection between modern jazz/improvised music and modern art music; exactly where it ended up may not be so easy to put your finger on - just as it should be.

With a star team of young Norwegian musicians and a relatively different way in thinking ensemble construction than most others in the jazz field, the stage is set for a release packed with fantastic soloist performances, well-composed ensemble parts, and a particularly rich and interesting soundscape that is constantly changing.

Paintings of an Exhibition

For the recording Paintings of an Exhibition by the Silent Explosion Orchestra I arranged the opening and closing versions of Mussorgskys promenade theme from Pictures at an Exhibition, which you can hear briefely in the video.

BIOGRAPHY

David Sætre Hveem is an Oslo-based composer, arranger, and conductor. With a solid background in jazz and extensive experience across various genres, he primarily works with rhythmic/non-classical music and large ensembles. He regularly arranges for professional ensembles such as the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the various Norwegian military bands, and conducting ensembles like the Norwegian Wind Ensemble and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. He also frequently collaborates with leading big bands, wind bands, and brass bands in Norway. As a composer, he has released two albums with music for large jazz ensembles, written commissions for various concert bands, as well as several full programs for big band.

In addition to an active freelance career, he is employed as a Ph.D. research fellow at the Norwegian Academy of Music starting in the fall of 2024, researching competence in conducting rhythmic music with large ensembles.

David Sætre Hveem er en Oslo-basert komponist, arrangør og dirigent. Med solid bakgrunn fra jazzfeltet og med bred erfaring fra ulike sjangre, jobber han primært med rytmisk musikk og store ensembler. Med jevnlige arrangeringsoppdrag for profesjonelle ensembler som Kringkastingsorkesteret og de ulike forsvarskorpsene, dirigeringsoppdrag for blant annet Det Norske Blåseensemble og Frankfurt Radio Big Band, jobber han også mye med de ledende amatørstorbandene, korpsene og brassbandene på østlandet. Som komponist har han utgitt to album med egen musikk for store jazzensembler, komponert bestillingsverk for flere korps til NM, og skrevet flere fulle konserter med egen musikk for storband.

Utover en aktiv frilanskarriere, er han fra høsten 2024 ansatt som ph.d.-stipendiat ved Norges musikkhøgskole for å forske på dirigering av rytmisk musikk med store ensembler.
